West Coast Fertility Centers rates with frozen eggs (Last Update March 2008): 21 Babies Born from Frozen Eggs
38 Pregnancies (Outcome of 70 transfers)
The freezing of eggs, also called human oocyte cryopreservation, is a rapidly advancing technology of extracting, freezing and storing a woman’s eggs (oocytes). The eggs can later be thawed, fertilized, and transferred to the uterus as embryos months or years later.
Reproductive cryopreservation is not new. Medical clinics have been freezing sperm since the 1950s and embryos since the 1980s. While sperm and embryo cryopreservation have become routine, egg freezing has developed at a slower pace, largely due to the high water content of eggs, risking cellular damage through the freeze-thaw process. While many in the scientific community still consider egg freezing to be experimental, fertility specialists also share much optimism that it provides options for groups of women who might otherwise have few or none.
Physicians and scientists have documented hundreds of births from oocyte cryopreservation worldwide, and rates of birth defects and chromosomal defects have been comparable to that of the general population. At West Coast Fertility Centers, we have achieved a 91% survival rate after thawing. The graph below depicts the success rates of the oocyte cryopreservation process from thawing to cleavage.

Given the number of eggs we have had to freeze and thaw to produce these pregnancies, we believe this is by far the most efficient experience with this technology anywhere in the world. Three groups can benefit from oocyte cryopreservation:
- Women diagnosed with cancer that have not yet begun chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
- Women undergoing treatment with assisted reproductive technologies who do not consider embryo freezing an option for religious and/or moral reasons.
- Women who would like to preserve their future ability to have children, either because they do not yet have a partner, or for other personal or medical reasons.
If you are considering cryopreservation of your eggs, it is of primary importance to ask some key questions:
- How many live births has the program had?
- What is the average number of eggs cryopreserved to produce a live birth?
- What is the cost of the procedure including medications and annual ongoing
cryopreservation storage fees?
- Are there any means to recoup some of the costs of the procedure should I choose not to use my eggs?
At West Coast Fertility Centers, we offer frozen donor eggs to couples looking for an option to traditional egg donation. If you need donor eggs you now can select from a donor from The Frozen Egg Bank, Inc.
