"Fertility Fitness" Program
Mission of Fertility Fitness
To implement custom health and wellness plans that incorporate nutrition, fitness, and stress reduction skills tailored to each person’s individual needs. The goal of this program is to help women attain physical and emotional well-being so that they can achieve their maximum fertility potential and confidently face — and ultimately overcome — the challenges of infertility.
Description of “Fertility Fitness” Program
The human body is an intricate and dynamic system that is affected by all of the choices we make regarding food and exercise. There is also a direct connection between our bodies and emotions. The purpose of WCFC’s Fertility Fitness Program is to teach, design, and implement a custom health and wellness plan that incorporates nutrition, fitness, and stress reduction skills tailored to each person’s individual needs. The goal of this program is to help women attain physical and emotional well-being so that they can achieve their maximum fertility potential and confidently face—and ultimately overcome—the challenges of fertility treatment.
This program provides a toolkit of skills that are designed to enhance the high quality care that you are already receiving from WCFC. Our aim is to create long-term benefits to the health and wellness for yourself and your growing family. This nutrition and exercise program will have myriad benefits for women who are dealing with issues such as excessive body weight and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). These benefits include: improved fertility potential, minimizing insulin resistance and digestion, reduced inflammation in the body, weight loss, increased energy levels and physiologic response and lowered stress levels. Taken together, these lifestyle changes also reduce the risk for developing serious chronic diseases often associated with PCOS such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and endometrial cancer.
We at WCFC recognize that undergoing fertility treatments can be a very vulnerable and stressful experience, both physically and emotionally. By nature, when we feel distressed our bodies tend to use their energy resources to fight off the perceived threat, something which is known as the “fight or flight” response. During these periods the nervous system signals the body to release adrenaline and cortisol, hormones that make the heart beat faster, raise blood pressure, slow the digestive process, and boost glucose levels in the bloodstream.
In temporary times of crisis we need these hormones to be released. However, overly high levels of cortisol that stay in our bloodstream for prolonged periods may result in many outcomes that may adversely affect fertility, such as suppressed thyroid function and immunity, decreased bone and muscle density, high blood pressure, and a build-up of abdominal fat. WCFC’s Wellness Program is dedicated to providing patients with stress reduction tools that will calm the nervous system and bring the body back into balance, thus ensuring that women are in optimal health as they move forward with their fertility treatment.
Obesity Adversely Affects Reproduction, But How Specifically?
The prevalence of obesity has increased substantially over the past 2 decades. Almost two-thirds of women and three fourths of men in the United States are over weight or obese. Nearly 50% of reproductive-age women are obese. A disease of excess body fat and insulin resistance, obesity increases the risks of hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, and cancer as well as other serious health problems. While not all individuals with obesity will have infertility, obesity is associated with impaired reproduction in both women and men, adverse obstetric outcomes, and health problems in offspring. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) reviewed this important issue in a recent practice committee opinion. Read Full Article Here

Testimonial from the Fertility Fitness Program
"For many years now I have been struggling with my weight - for most of my life actually. It felt like it was impossible to lose the weight, but now that I have been on this fitness program I know that it is not impossible.
Thanks to the amazing staff at West Coast Fertility, and especially Elaine, I have been losing weight. What makes this program so effective and different is, without a question, the amazing staff. From the moment I arrived, everyone made me feel so comfortable - and everyone is so positive and encouraging.
Elaine is wonderful! She helps me stay positive and helps me stay on track by checking up on me throughout the week. She follows up to check my progress and to answer any questions I might have.
This program is amazing because it really is a life style change it’s not just a quick fix diet - it really does change your life. Since I have been on this program I feel so much better both physically and emotionally. Going through infertility can be emotionally draining and even more so when you are overweight, but being on the program really has helped me."
